When people see photos or videos from my art studio, they sometimes assume it’s a carefully designed creative space.
But the truth is much simpler.
It’s just The Shed.
How It Started
Several years ago, Henry built a small structure in our backyard. It truly was just a shed. His shed, actually. Around that same time, I had started getting into paper crafts, and it got to the point where working in the living room or dining room just wasn’t working. I’d have to clean everything up even when I wasn’t done with a project. So I asked Henry if I could have a small section in his shed to store my supplies.
He said yes. But instead of just carving out a corner for me, he gutted the whole thing and built me a small living space.
Over the years it morphed into my home office too, which was a gift during the pandemic. There’s a couch in there now, a sink area just outside, and a TV that plays a series or a movie quietly in the background while I work. This is where I experiment with new art techniques, film Art Tips and process videos, test ideas for products in my shop, and sometimes, just draw or paint or simply be.
Many people call it my studio. I always come back to calling it The Shed. Not the She-Shed, as some have suggested. While I know the phrase is meant playfully, it never quite felt right. So I go back to The Shed. I even made a sign for it out of cut paper strips, framed it, and hung it above the sliding door outside.
It’s not a large space. But it’s the place where many of my designs begin.
The Unexpected Gift of a Small Studio
There’s something special about a small creative space.
It encourages focus.
It holds the tools, colors, and materials that become part of the work.
And over time, it quietly becomes part of the story behind the art. It is my sanctuary.
From The Shed, With Love
So when you see videos or photos labeled “From The Shed”, that’s exactly what it is.
Just a small backyard studio where ideas turn into drawings, designs, and sometimes products that eventually find their way into someone else’s home.
